Hashim Thaçi is not a war criminal. He is the man who helped free a people. The court holding him in The Hague is an insult dressed up as justice — built on a smear that Russian influence helped turn into law.

Yesterday, tens of thousands of people filled the center of Pristina. They carried the red and black flag. They chanted UÇK. They held photographs of Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi under slogans that need no translation for any Albanian who lived the 1990s: Liberators, bring them home. In the name of the people, declare them innocent. Kosovo is waiting.

That is not a fringe. That is the country speaking.

On Wednesday, 16 September, a panel of foreign judges in a former Europol building in The Hague will read a verdict against the man who declared Kosovo independent. Prosecutors want 45 years. They want to take a freedom fighter, a prime minister, and a president, and lock him in a European cage until he is an old man. They want to do it in the name of a court that Kosovo was coerced into creating, to investigate a horror story that was never proved, never charged, and has been recycled for fifteen years by the same capitals that spent the 1990s denying that Albanians even had a right to exist as a people.

If that is justice, the word has been emptied out.

He was not a gangster. He was the political face of a people under the knife.

Hashim Thaçi was born in 1968 in Burojë, in Drenica — the valley Serbia tried, more than once, to erase. He was a student activist when Belgrade stripped Kosovo of its autonomy and turned a majority into a subject population. He went to Switzerland, raised money, built networks, and came home as Gjarpëri, the Snake: the political mind of the Kosovo Liberation Army when the only language Slobodan Milošević understood was force.

He was not hiding in the woods with a rifle because that was not his job. Wesley Clark, the NATO commander who ran the air war that stopped the expulsions, told the same Hague court last year what every serious person in 1999 already knew: the KLA was not a conventional army, and Thaçi “clearly wasn’t in charge” of the men on the ground. He was the spokesman, the negotiator, the man Western enough to sit at Rambouillet and sign the paper Serbia refused. When Belgrade said no, NATO bombed. When the bombing ended, a million expelled Albanians came home. Thaçi walked out of a guerrilla movement and into the work of building a state.

In 2008 he stood in the Assembly and declared the Republic of Kosovo. In 2016 he became its president. He was the partner of Washington, London, and Berlin when those capitals still remembered who the aggressor had been. Joe Biden called him Kosovo’s George Washington. The comparison was large. The insult now being prepared in The Hague is larger.

He did not flee when the indictment dropped. He cut short a trip to the United States, resigned the presidency to protect the office, and boarded a plane to face a court that many of his own voters already regarded as a trap. That is not the behavior of a man who thinks he has a massacre to hide. That is the behavior of a man who still believes the West he served will eventually remember which side it was on.

The body-count that actually happened

Before anyone recites the indictment, recite the war.

Serbian police, army, and paramilitaries killed more than 13,000 people in Kosovo. The overwhelming majority were ethnic Albanians. About a million were driven from their homes. Whole families were burned in their compounds. Račak was not a rumor. Prekaz was not a rumor. The train stations of Macedonia and the camps of Albania were not a rumor. NATO did not fly 78 days of sorties because Hashim Thaçi had a branding problem. It flew them because a European government was emptying a country of its majority.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia existed for that crime. It convicted Serbian generals. Some of them have already served their time and gone home to condolences from Belgrade. The men who organized the expulsion of a people are not sitting in the dock this week. The men who stopped the expulsion are.

That inversion is the outrage. It is not a legal technicality. It is the whole moral architecture of the Specialist Chambers. The court’s mandate was written to hunt the KLA. It does not sit in judgment of the state that made the KLA necessary. Kosovo Albanians understood this immediately. In polling after the court was stood up, more than three in four said the mandate itself was unfair. They were not defending crime. They were refusing to watch their liberation war put on trial while the other side’s war is treated as settled history.

Hysni Gucati told the crowd yesterday what every family that lost someone to Serbian forces already knows: Kosovo’s freedom was won through sacrifice, and no courtroom can erase it. He is right.

The organ story was a weapon. It was never a case.

The Specialist Chambers were not born from a clean file of battlefield evidence. They were born from a document.

In 2008, Carla Del Ponte, out of office, put into a memoir the claim that the KLA had murdered prisoners for their organs. In 2010–11, Swiss senator Dick Marty produced a Council of Europe report that named Thaçi as the “boss” of a so-called Drenica Group and draped over him the most grotesque accusation available in European politics: that Kosovo’s future president had run a slaughterhouse for kidneys. The report was adopted in a Council of Europe that Russia had spent years learning how to use. It named sources it would not produce. It offered a headline it could not prove.

What followed was not a trial of that claim. What followed was the laundering of that claim into an institution.

EULEX’s own war-crimes chief, Matti Raatikainen, said at the time there was “no evidence whatsoever in this case.” Parallel investigations went looking for the yellow house and the secret clinics and the industrial harvest. They did not find a case that could be charged.

Denis MacShane, Britain’s former Europe minister, wrote that Marty’s text reflected the politicization of the Council of Europe after Russia joined it, and that there was no evidence tying Thaçi to organ trafficking. Edi Rama later stood in Strasbourg and asked the Council to withdraw the report, and pointed at Russian influence. The accusation has been a staple of Serbian and Kremlin media ever since — the same ecosystem that would later invent organ stories about Ukraine.

Thaçi has said in his own words what the record shows. The court that now holds him was sold to Kosovo’s parliament as the instrument that would finally test the Marty allegations. The indictment that actually arrived contains nothing about organ trafficking. Not a count. Not a sentence.

General Wesley Clark, testifying for the defence, described the Marty allegations as a Russian disinformation campaign.

The prosecutors who spent years with the file apparently reached the same practical conclusion: the story was not fit to charge.

So here is the sequence, without the diplomatic perfume. A slander is floated. Russia and Belgrade amplify it. A European assembly adopts a report that cannot stand up in court. Brussels and Washington tell Pristina that the price of respectability is a special tribunal. The tribunal is built. The slander is dropped. The tribunal remains — and it is aimed at the political leadership of the war of independence.

That is not accountability. That is bait-and-switch.

The leftover charges are the joint-criminal-enterprise theory familiar from every prosecution that cannot put a defendant at a crime scene: that wanting to control Kosovo, during a war for survival, is itself the crime, and that every ugly thing done by local groups in a fragmented guerrilla war can be hung around the neck of the man who talked to diplomats. Clark told the judges Thaçi had no idea what was happening in the fighting. The prosecution’s answer is to treat political leadership of a liberation movement as command of every cellar in every village. If that standard had been applied to every resistance army of the twentieth century, half the founding fathers of Europe would be in the same building.

Six years in a cell for a verdict that should have been a letter of thanks

Thaçi has been in detention since November 2020. Nearly six years. No conviction. The court has refused to send him home even now, days before judgment, on the theory that the former president of a NATO-created state might obstruct a process that has already taken his office, his freedom, and a half-decade of his life.

As if that were not enough, prosecutors opened a second case: that conversations in the visiting room amount to witness-tampering. They want six more years, stacked on top of the 45. The defence’s description is the accurate one. They are trying to jail him for talking. In a case built on the claim that Kosovo intimidates witnesses, the most powerful witness against the narrative is the man sitting in the chair, and they would like him quieter.

This is what “rule of law” looks like when it is applied to Albanians and not to the people who burned their houses.

The people have not replaced him

Kosovo’s party system has moved on in the years he has been locked away. Vetëvendosje wins elections. The presidency is vacant; the Assembly cannot elect a head of state; the country is being run by an acting president while the political class argues over names most voters did not choose. That vacuum is not proof that Thaçi is forgotten. It is proof that the generation he brought into independence has not found another figure with his combination of wartime legitimacy and Western fluency.

There is no honest poll that already anoints him president-elect from a prison cell. There is something more important. On Saturday the streets of Pristina answered the countdown clocks with a crowd. Richard Grenell, Donald Trump’s envoy, said out loud what a large part of the old pro-American elite in Kosovo thinks: that the country is being prepared for Hashim Thaçi’s return, and that the job waiting for him is the one at the top of the government. Analysts in Pristina have been saying the same thing in plainer language. If the judges do not convict him, the PDK’s founders come home, and the political map changes. Some of them say the chances that Thaçi and Veseli return to power are extremely high. Some of them say he would take the votes of people who have stopped voting. All of them are describing a man the public still recognizes.

A people that puts countdown clocks in its squares for a defendant is not waiting for a sentence. It is waiting for a homecoming.

What Wednesday must be

The Specialist Chambers can still do the only decent thing left to it. It can say that a guerrilla political leader who helped bring NATO into a just war is not a persecutor of humanity. It can admit, even now, that a court invented to test a Kremlin-amplified fable should not be allowed to rewrite the founding of a country.

If it does not — if it reads out decades against Thaçi, Veseli, Selimi, and Krasniqi — it will not have proved that the KLA was a criminal enterprise. It will have proved that Europe is still capable of putting the victims of a war of extermination in the dock because it is tired of them, and because Belgrade and Moscow never stopped working the file.

Hashim Thaçi left Switzerland and risked his life so that Albanians in Kosovo would not live on their knees. He sat with the Americans when sitting with the Americans was the whole strategy. He declared a state. He resigned a presidency rather than drag it into a cell. He has spent six years listening to foreigners explain his war to him.

Bring him home. Let him walk into Pristina as what he was before the slander and what he remains after it: a liberator. If this country still has a use for the word president, it will find him soon enough.

Berlin, spring 1945.

Tehran, summer 2026.

Hitler sat in a bunker issuing orders to phantom armies while the Red Army closed in. Retreat was treated as treason. Units that no longer existed were told to hold lines that had already vanished. A shrinking circle of loyalists filtered what reached him. Reality broke through only in the final days — and even then he blamed everyone but himself.

By then the German economy was not “under strain.” It was finished. The currency was hollow. Cities starved. Fuel was so scarce that tanks sat and aircraft stayed grounded. Food, coal, and oil had been spent on a war the state could no longer supply. The Nazi regime had long treated the German people as fuel for the ideology. When that fuel failed, Hitler ordered the Nero Decree — destroy what remained so the enemy, and the surviving Germans, would inherit only ruins. The regime came first. The people were expendable.

Joseph Goebbels kept the propaganda machine running until the very end. Total-war speeches. Miracle weapons. The promise that defeat meant national annihilation. It delayed demoralization. It could not put gasoline in a tank or bread in a kitchen.

Now look at Iran.

The leadership operates inside its own information bunker: filtered reports, a throttled internet, a narrative of heroic resistance that grows louder as the real economy contracts. Propaganda remains its only viable tools. Claims of strategic victory continue even as official year-on-year inflation has run near 88%, food has often run far higher, the rial has collapsed into the millions per dollar, oil exports are choked if not decimated, and families ration rice and protein.

The military picture is not a secret except inside the bunker. Missile plants and air defenses have been hit for months. Launch rates fell as stockpiles ran down and factories were smashed. What remains can still sting a base or a tanker. It cannot in any reasonable way underwrite the language coming out of Tehran.

That language is the tell.

After Khamenei’s death the IRGC promised the “most ferocious offensive operation in history” against the United States and Israel. Ground-force commanders talk of “lightning offensives” that will appear anywhere and “destroy the enemy.” The Guard has warned that the next round will “extend beyond the region” and bring opponents “to their knees in places you cannot imagine.” A senior IRGC figure has threatened “asymmetric warfare” in Wall Street and Manhattan. Officials tout missiles “tested” against U.S. ships and a doctrine of striking before a threat materializes. Here are more delusional claims:

Meanwhile the US Navy has locked down the country with its Naval blockade. No US Ships are burning, no ships are fleeing.

To obtain peace, in one recent IRGC formula, requires Washington to stop threatening Iran, Israel to leave Lebanon, Yemen’s blockade to end, and $24 billion in frozen assets to be released — as if a battered state were dictating terms from strength. Is there anyone on this planet that finds this a credible statement?

These are not war plans. They are delusional bunker orders. Germany in 1945 still had radio time for miracle weapons after it had lost the fuel to move an army. Iran in 2026 still has television time for the most ferocious offensive in history while drivers sleep in queues for a ration of gasoline.

Iran sits on crude and still cannot keep the pumps wet. Refineries were damaged. Imports of refined fuel were cut by blockade. Officials have described a daily gasoline shortfall on the order of 14–15 million liters. Quotas were cut. Some prices were doubled. Stations in cities have run dry. Truckers and taxi drivers have walked off. For a petro-state, that is not a messaging problem. That is the material catastrophe arriving at the curb.

Hitler forbade retreat because admitting movement would have admitted the map. Tehran forbids a smaller confession: that the security state can still make threats it cannot resource. Phantom offensives against Manhattan cost nothing to announce. A liter of unsubsidized petrol costs a household something every day.

Resources and political energy still flow first to the apparatus, the ideological project, and regime survival. The population absorbs the cost — in inflation, in empty pumps, in jobs that vanish when oil cannot move.

History does not repeat exactly. Iran is not facing Soviet tanks in the streets of Tehran. The Islamic Republic is not the Third Reich. A recognizable pattern is not a photocopy. But the pattern is there: isolation from reality, propaganda as residual strength, resource exhaustion, and a system that prioritizes its own continuity over the people it claims to defend.

A bunker is not only concrete. It is a closed circuit of reports that confirm the story the leadership needs. In 1945 that circuit produced divisions that existed on paper. In 2026 it produces “lightning offensives” while the export terminals sit quiet, the floating stockpile of unsold crude runs down, and the gas line forms at 3 a.m.

Goebbels could not print coal. Tehran cannot print dollars a bank will clear, or refined gasoline a blockade will let in. You do not need to dynamite your own factories to treat citizens as secondary. You do it when hard currency still reaches the organs of survival while the grocery aisle and the petrol station become weekly humiliations. You do it when every shortage is recoded as proof of virtue. You do it when the first budget line that cannot be cut is the one that keeps the regime intact.

When a system begins treating its citizens as fuel rather than the point of the state, the end may not be immediate. Collapse is not a date on a calendar. It is a direction. Berlin reached the end of that road with artillery in the suburbs. Tehran is not there. It is on the same road: a leadership sealed against the ledger, a propaganda office doing the work the army and the economy can no longer do, and a people asked to outlast a project that will not outlast them.

The bunker does not need tanks at the door. It only needs to prefer itself — and to keep issuing orders that the fuel, the factories, and the currency can no longer obey.

Washington is not asking Beijing for a speech. It is choking Iran’s oil — the legal cargoes and the shadow fleet — and daring China to keep the relationship anyway.

That is the trap. Cheap Iranian barrels were the whole commercial case for staying close to Tehran. Kill those barrels and the “partnership” is just risk: sanctions on Chinese refiners, tankers, terminals, and eventually banks.

China would not be picking a side in a distant quarrel. It would be picking a bill it cannot afford. Under that squeeze, lining up with Iran is not defiance. It is the wrong side of a fight China cannot afford to join.

Iran is a cost center

Start with the relationship itself. Iran is a liability to China, not a useful partner.

Iran does not buy Chinese industry at scale. It does not supply advanced technology. It cannot clear dollars, insure ships, or protect a Chinese bank from OFAC. What it brings is sanctioned crude, Hormuz risk, and a growing target on China’s own firms. That is not a pillar of strategy. That is a cost center.

The only real thing Iran sold China was a discount. In 2025, China took about 1.4 million barrels a day of Iranian crude — roughly 12–13% of China’s imports, and more than 80% of what Iran managed to ship. Official Chinese customs have recorded zero Iranian crude since 2022. The barrels still arrive. They are just relabeled, transferred at sea, and absorbed by independent “teapot” refiners, mostly in Shandong, chasing $8–10 off Brent.

If the United States keeps throttling those flows, the discount dies. Beijing would eat the political cost and lose the payoff.

The barrels are replaceable. The American market is not.

Those barrels are replaceable. Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Brazil, the UAE, Oman, and China’s own stockpiles can cover a hole. Inventories already give Beijing months of cushion if Iranian barrels thin out.

U.S. demand is not replaceable in the same way. In 2025 China still sold about $420 billion of goods to the United States. That is down sharply from the year before, and ASEAN and the EU have taken diverted cargo. They still cannot stand in for American households and factories. A sanctioned teapot in Shandong is a margin problem. Losing the U.S. consumer market is a national-accounts problem — and a factory-floor problem.

Coastal manufacturing still lives on foreign orders. When U.S. tariffs spiked in 2025, new export orders sagged and plants felt it within weeks. China already has a weak property sector and soft youth hiring. Another export shock does not need to be a total embargo to produce layoffs, delayed wages, and local unrest. That is the pattern from the last downturn: workers did not walk out over ideology. They walked out over missed paychecks. A political choice for Tehran that puts Chinese exporters in the sanctions crosshairs would land in the same place — idle lines in Guangdong and Zhejiang, not a parade in Tehran.

The expensive part is secondary sanctions

The expensive part is not missing oil. It is secondary sanctions.

Hit the refiners, the terminals, the shipowners — then the banks and insurers. Treasury has already gone after teapot buyers and the shadow fleet that feeds them. Iran cannot shield those companies. The United States can punish them. Official China–Iran goods trade is already small. The oil that matters barely appears in customs data. That opacity worked while Washington looked the other way. It becomes a liability the moment OFAC starts naming Chinese firms, hulls, and terminals.

From there the damage moves off the tanker and onto the payroll. A listed refiner is one story. A bank that will no longer clear a shipment, an insurer that drops a hull, a buyer that cancels an order rather than touch a sanctioned counterparty — that is how an Iran policy becomes unemployed migrants and angry factory towns. Oil sales to China help fund Iran’s budget. China does not need Iran to run its economy. China does need export orders to keep the coastal machine running.

The wrong side of the ledger

Choosing Tehran while America is cutting off the oil means defending a shrinking, risky supplier against the world’s largest consumer market and the dollar system.

That is not strategy. That is a loss.

Beijing can keep the slogans. It cannot keep the discount if the ships stop and the refiners get listed. Once the commercial case is gone, the relationship is what it always was underneath the barrels: a political friendship that costs money, invites sanctions, and buys China almost nothing it cannot get elsewhere — while putting at risk the orders that pay the workers who actually keep the state quiet.

Washington is not waiting for a communiqué from Beijing. It is removing the only reason the communiqué was worth writing. China can stand with Iran, or it can keep selling to America. It does not get both.

The Iranian regime can beat a crowd. It has done it. It has a harder time beating a week of unpaid wages, unsustainable inflation, a ration card that no longer covers the month, and a commercial class that can no longer turn loyalty into cash.

Shahid Rajaee is not closed. It is commercially quiet. That is the more important fact.

New footage from Iran’s main container hub near Bandar Abbas shows empty yards, idle cranes, and almost no truck cycle. AIS still picks up a dozen-plus contacts in the complex. A lot of them are tugs, support boats, and other non-container hulls — not a normal string of box ships working the terminal.

The port still exists. The commerce that pays the country does not.

Crude can hide. Boxes cannot.

That distinction matters.

Crude can hide in dark-fleet games and dedicated oil terminals. Containers cannot. Rajaee is the pipe for industrial inputs, machinery, parts, and the non-oil goods that keep factories and shops alive. It handles the overwhelming share of Iran’s container trade. When that yard goes quiet, the squeeze moves off the oil ledger and onto the real economy. Prices do not wait for a think-tank paper. They move when the boxes stop.

Washington wants that result. The maritime pressure on Iranian ports has been on and off all year. The latest Treasury campaign put shipping back in the kill box and said the point is to cut the regime off from remaining revenue. Empty pads at Rajaee are what that looks like on the water — if the pictures hold and if foreign liners stay away.

A port can stay standing and still lose its function. Cranes against a gray sky are not throughput. A tug on AIS is not a liner call. Watch the difference or you will misread the video.

The labor story at the same gate is already in the open. Contractors at Rajaee have cut shifts and laid people off as vessel traffic collapsed. Formal workers talk about short contracts and pay that no longer covers Bandar Abbas rent. A quiet terminal does not only starve import houses. It puts the men who used to move the boxes onto the street, into a currency that will not sit still.

September 8 was the date they feared

On September 8 the government let the third-tier gasoline price double — station-card fuel from 5,000 tomans a liter to 10,000 — while leaving the two subsidized monthly quotas untouched. It is the compromise of a state that remembers November 2019, when a sudden fuel shock became a national revolt, and January 2026, when the street came back in numbers the security forces answered with live fire.

They tried to make this one look technical. Officials said most drivers would not feel it. They said the extra money would go to livelihoods. They still put police, special units, and Basij around stations in Tehran, Mashhad, Shiraz, Karaj, Isfahan, Tabriz, Abadan, Qeshm. In Khorramabad a mounted machine gun went up before the price even moved. That is not a communications plan. That is a regime that knows what a pump can start when inflation has already eaten the rest of the month.

The street had already begun to move on the livelihood file. On September 7, retirees and labor groups were out in Kermanshah, Isfahan, Sanandaj, Tehran, Ahvaz, Shush, Ilam, Hamadan. Telecom and Social Security pensioners. Teachers. Job-seekers. Oil workers on offshore platforms and in Assaluyeh held Monday protests over wages, caps, and unpaid benefits. In Tehran the chant was blunt: we have no livelihood; we are sick of war.

This is not January 8. Do not pretend it is. January was a mass event that the apparatus drowned. What you have now is smaller, occupational, and stacked on top of empty tanks, a doubled unsubsidized price, wages that arrive late if they arrive, and inflation that does not take a day off. That combination is how a livelihood protest stops being a sector story.

The security state can beat a crowd. It has done it. It has a harder time beating unpaid wages, unsustainable inflation, a ration card that no longer covers the month, and a commercial class that can no longer turn loyalty into cash.

This does not first break the street

Here is the part most people miss.

This does not first break the street. It first breaks the deal inside the elite.

Iran is hard to poll. The last serious public survey that got through, GAMAAN in late 2022, still found 81 percent inside the country saying “No” to the Islamic Republic and only 15 percent saying “Yes.” Earlier that year the same group found only 22 percent naming the Islamic Republic as their preferred system.

The support base is a minority. And the part of that minority that matters is not the slogans. It is the people who stay loyal because the system builds and protects fortunes.

A quiet Rajaee means that product is failing.

If you cannot move boxes, you cannot reliably convert political loyalty into cash. You cannot service the networks. You cannot promise the next generation of insiders that the arrangement still pays. Inflation does the rest. It taxes whatever cash they still hold while the yard sits empty. At that point the oligarchs stop being an asset. They become a class with stranded wealth, shrinking optionality, and a regime that will spend them before it spends itself.

The September 8 deployment is the public half of the same problem. The state can put guns at the station. It cannot make the yard fill itself, and it cannot make the rial hold. One is theater. The other is the ledger.

Two choices. Incentives, not romance.

They then have two choices.

Turn on the power base early enough to keep some of the money and live long enough to spend it. Or dig in and ride the apparatus into economic ruin.

My bet follows the money. The security state can run on coercion for a long time. It cannot indefinitely keep a commercial elite loyal once the commercial machine stops clearing and inflation eats what is left. When the regime can no longer deliver fortunes, those people provide zero function. They will not die for a slogan. They will hedge, split, cut deals, and eventually peel off the power base.

That is not romance. It is incentives.

Watch liner calls. Watch truck gates. Watch rail out of Bandar Abbas. Watch whether the import houses still get paid. Watch whether the labor actions stay occupational or find each other. Satellite can tell you the berths are thin. Only repeatable cargo movement tells you the machine is back.

If Rajaee stays in this state, the public eats the shortage first. The oligarchs make the political decision second. The clock is already running.

Countries do not make grand strategy and then go shopping for fuel. They make the strategy their energy system will allow.

If you buy your heat, your factories, and your gasoline from someone who can shut the valve, you have already outsourced part of your foreign ministry.

Berlin spent years treating cheap Russian gas as an economic win and a peace theory. By 2021, more than half of German gas was coming from Moscow. When Putin wanted Europe quieter on Ukraine, he did not need a new speech. He needed the tap.

The warning had already been delivered in public. At a 2018 NATO summit, Donald Trump said what the pipeline made obvious. It was treated as a vulgar interruption of a commercial arrangement. It was a description of a vote.

Germany will have almost 70 percent of their country controlled by Russia with natural gas. You tell me, is that appropriate?

Industry paid. Households paid. Policy narrowed.

Then the people who had built the arrangement said so themselves. Wolfgang Schäuble, the former finance minister, did not reach for a theory.

I was wrong. We were all wrong.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who had been the great advocate of the eastern “bridge,” recanted Nord Stream 2 in the same season.

My adherence to Nord Stream 2 was clearly a mistake. We held on to bridges that Russia no longer believed in, and that our partners warned us about.

That is not a metaphor. That is what import dependence looks like when the supplier has a vote.

Iran is the other side of the same coin

Iran is denial instead of supply.

Tehran sits on enormous crude and still cannot keep its own pumps open. The country has long refined less gasoline than it burns and filled the gap with imports. The U.S. maritime squeeze and damaged refining capacity cut that gap off.

The result is not a think-tank chart. It is lines at stations in Tehran, Mashhad, Isfahan, Bandar Abbas — including at 2 a.m.

The government is scared to lift subsidies because the last time fuel prices jumped, the street moved. Labor protests and panic buying are already back. President Masoud Pezeshkian has had to say the quiet part on state television.

The enemy has targeted our oil and gas resources, and our production has fallen. We are standing firm in the war, but we have to help increase the country’s resilience.

Resilience, here, means keeping the pumps from becoming a referendum.

This is how an energy weapon hits a regime that thought oil was a shield. Crude in the ground does not run a taxi if the refined barrel cannot get in and the refinery cannot run.

Shortages do not make a revolution. They make a choice.

That is the political risk.

Shortages do not automatically produce a revolution. They produce a choice: raise prices and ration, or print scarcity and wait. Either path eats legitimacy.

An economy that was already a disaster now has a visible, daily humiliation at the pump. Civil unrest becomes more likely. Regime fracture becomes more thinkable.

The security state can beat a crowd. It has a harder time beating empty tanks, unpaid wages, and an elite that can no longer convert loyalty into cash.

The United States used to live on the German side of the ledger

Before it became a large producer and net petroleum exporter, import leverage was a fact of American life. Embargoes and supplier politics were not abstractions. They showed up in policy. That is the world Kissinger was trying to get the West out of when he warned against becoming a hostage.

That is no longer the same country.

Domestic production plus Western Hemisphere barrels is a shield. The Venezuela arrangement — U.S. companies into a huge reserve base, with a growing share of current Venezuelan output already moving to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries — is not next month’s cheap gasoline. It is a long-horizon attempt to put more supply inside a U.S. security and commercial perimeter instead of leaving it as someone else’s bargaining chip.

That is foreign policy written as an offtake contract.

The rule is simple

If you control production, refining, shipping, and insurance, you set terms.

If you only control demand, you accept terms.

If someone can deny you molecules, they can narrow your wars, your alliances, and your domestic peace.

Germany rented its policy from Gazprom, then had to hear it from Schäuble and Steinmeier. Iran is discovering, in Pezeshkian’s own words, that a blockade on boxes and barrels is a blockade on the regime’s deal with its own people. The U.S. spent a generation trying to get out from under other people’s valves.

Energy independence is not a slogan. It is the difference between making foreign policy and having it made for you.

The Same Openings, the Same Playbook

They are not the same movement. They do not share a theology. They do not need to.

The Muslim Brotherhood and the organized socialist left are working the same American openings at the same time, with the same method. Enter legally. Wear a clean label. Build fronts. Talk justice. Keep a small disciplined core and a larger belt of activists, nonprofits, campus chapters, and “community representatives.” Stay long enough to take the office, not just the microphone.

That is not a seminar theory. It is on the ballot.

Lenin told you why you sit in the parliament you mean to scrap

Lenin was not shy about why you occupy a system you intend to replace. In “Left-Wing” Communism: An Infantile Disorder (1920), he dressed down Communists who thought it was more revolutionary to boycott “bourgeois” elections. Participation, he wrote, does not honor the parliament. It helps kill it:

Far from causing harm to the revolutionary proletariat, participation in a bourgeois-democratic parliament, even a few weeks before the victory of a Soviet republic and even after such a victory, actually helps that proletariat to prove to the backward masses why such parliaments deserve to be done away with; it facilitates their successful dissolution, and helps to make bourgeois parliamentarianism “politically obsolete.”

That is the whole method in one paragraph. You do not enter City Hall, Congress, the school board, or the nonprofit circuit because you revere the constitutional order. You enter because the order still has prestige with the public, and you need that prestige long enough to teach the public to despise it.

Lenin was just as clear that the cadre must not become the costume. In the same book:

You must not sink to the level of the masses, to the level of the backward strata of the class. That is incontestable. You must tell them the bitter truth. You are in duty bound to call their bourgeois-democratic and parliamentary prejudices what they are — prejudices.

And then the operational sentence, which every open society should have framed on the wall of its election office:

Whilst you lack the strength to do away with bourgeois parliaments and every other type of reactionary institution, you must work within them because it is there that you will still find workers who are duped.

Work inside until you can abolish. Use the microphone until you can take the desk. Keep a vanguard that knows the difference between the slogan sold to the public and the program kept in the core.

That is not ancient history. It is a user’s manual for any movement that treats liberal democracy as a phase rather than a settlement.

Stalin made the costume official policy

If Lenin wrote the theory of sitting in the parliament, Stalin wrote the export version: wrap the project in the host country’s favorite words.

At the 19th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in October 1952, Stalin told foreign Communists what banner to carry in countries they did not yet control. Raise “the banner of bourgeois democratic freedoms.” Raise “the banner of national independence.” Become “patriots of your country” in order “to rally around you the majority of the people.”

Read that again. The instruction was not to announce the dictatorship of the proletariat on day one. It was to borrow the language of the system you mean to replace — freedom, independence, patriotism — until you have the majority close enough to move.

The Comintern had already said the same thing about the “united front.” In the theses Stalin’s International adopted in 1926:

The united front tactics … are tactics of revolution, not evolution … They are not a democratic coalition, an alliance with social-democracy. They are only a method of revolutionary agitation and mobilization.

March separately. Strike together. Keep the core. Use the larger belt. Call it justice, anti-fascism, peace, the people. The point of the front is not the front. The point of the front is the capture.

American politics still pretends this is a museum exhibit. It is not. The tactic survived because it works in open societies. Liberal institutions are designed to admit newcomers, fund civil society, protect speech, and treat identity as a shield. Those are virtues. They are also load-bearing walls. If you treat them as a costume rather than a destination, you can walk through them for decades.

One column is already in City Hall

New York City now has a Democratic Socialist mayor. On January 1, 2026, Zohran Mamdani said it out loud at inauguration: he was elected as a democratic socialist and would govern as one. He would not abandon his principles for fear of being deemed radical. Bernie Sanders administered the oath. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke. The city’s first Muslim mayor put his hand on a Quran and promised to govern “expansively and audaciously.”

That was the microphone. June was the machinery.

In the June 2026 Democratic primaries, Mamdani-backed and DSA-aligned candidates knocked over establishment Democrats. Brad Lander beat Rep. Dan Goldman. Claire Valdez won the open seat in New York’s 7th. Darializa Avila Chevalier ousted five-term Rep. Adriano Espaillat. DSA-backed candidates also won down-ballot. That is institutional capture in public: party lists, City Hall, then Congress. You do not need a coup if you can win the primary and keep the nonprofit.

The socialist project is not mysterious. It aims at property, policing, borders, and the idea that the United States is a legitimate nation rather than an occupying brand. Affordability is the door. The room on the other side is a different theory of the state.

Lenin would have recognized the sequence. First the respectable label. Then the party machinery. Then the claim that the old constitutional limits are themselves the injustice.

The other column wrote the settlement plan down

The Brotherhood runs the other column of the same sheet.

Charity. Campus groups. Interfaith work. “Community representation.” Victimhood after every enforcement action. Migration and asylum because they are legal and hard to police without looking cruel. Citizenship because citizenship is a fortress: speech rules, grants, school boards, party lists, nonprofit law.

Hasan al-Banna, who founded the Muslim Brotherhood in 1928, did not describe Islam as a private faith parked next to a secular state. At the Fifth Conference he defined the call in a sentence that leaves no spare room:

Islam is creed and worship, homeland and nationality, religion and state, spirituality and work, Qur’an and sword.

That is a complete-system claim. Not a congregation. A polity. Al-Banna also told the Brothers what to do if no one else would carry that polity: they do not seek office for themselves if they find someone ready to bear the trust and rule by an Islamic, Quranic program.

If they find none, then government itself is part of their program, and they will work to seize it from the hands of every government that does not implement the rules of Islam.

He was a gradualist, not a weekend putschist. The plan had stages: propagate, organize, implement. Speak first. Build the disciplined membership second. Take the instruments of rule third. “It might take a longer time,” he told his followers, “but it is the only effective plan.” Patience is not moderation when the destination is still the state.

Sayyid Qutb, the Brotherhood’s most influential later theorist, stripped the courtesy language off the same ambition. In *Milestones* he wrote that modern societies — including Muslim ones that rule by man-made law — live in jahiliyyah, the pagan ignorance Islam was sent to end. The duty is not to renovate that order. It is to replace it:

The foremost duty of Islam in this world is to depose Jahiliyyah from the leadership of man, and to take the leadership into its own hands and enforce the particular way of life which is its permanent feature.

And the sentence that refuses the half-measure American institutions keep offering:

Islam cannot accept or agree to a situation which is half-Islam and half-Jahiliyyah. … The mixing and co-existence of the truth and falsehood is impossible.

Qutb also supplied the Brotherhood’s cousin of Lenin’s vanguard: a small, formed group that does not bargain away its concepts to make peace with the existing society.

We will not change our own values and concepts either more or less to make a bargain with this jahili society. Never.

Different scripture. Same architecture. Cadre first. Society later.

Yusuf al-Qaradawi, for decades the Brotherhood’s most important living jurist, explained how the movement should use the West’s favorite word. Democracy, he said, can be taken as method — elections, majority, a press — so long as it is locked inside Sharia. The version he wanted was not liberal:

The democracy I call for is the democracy of a Muslim society, which has its own fundamentals and red lines that should not be crossed. There are fundamentals that are not open to voting and questioning.

That is Lenin’s parliament trick in religious dress. Use the vote. Deny that the vote is sovereign. In 1995, speaking in Toledo, Ohio, to the Muslim Arab Youth Association, Qaradawi made the geographic ambition just as plain:

We will conquer Europe, we will conquer America! Not through the sword, but through da‘wa.

Not the riot. The settlement. The sermon, the campus chapter, the charity, the lawsuit, the interfaith panel, the citizenship ceremony.

They put the American plan on paper

This is not a rumor invented last week. In May 1991, Mohamed Akram wrote An Explanatory Memorandum on the General Strategic Goal for the Group in North America for the Brotherhood’s Shura Council. It was entered as Government Exhibit 003-0085 in the Holy Land Foundation trial. The strategic goal, already approved in 1987, was “enablement of Islam in North America”: a stable movement led by the Brotherhood, presenting Islam as a “civilization alternative,” supporting “the global Islamic state, wherever it is.”

Then the paragraph American officials keep having to rediscover:

The process of settlement is a “Civilization-Jihadist Process” with all the word means. The Ikhwan must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.

Settlement. Keys. Organizations. A part of the homeland. Rooted in spirits and minds. Enabled in the life of the society. That is front-building in the movement’s own English.

Federal prosecutors in the Holy Land Foundation case identified CAIR, the Islamic Society of North America, and the North American Islamic Trust as entities that were part of the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Students Association was the early campus seed. The Muslim American Society was later described by federal prosecutors as founded as the overt arm of the Brotherhood in the United States. These groups deny operational affiliation. The paper trail is why serious people keep naming them anyway.

After every investigation, the charge is not “we reject the exhibit.” The charge is bigotry. That is not a coincidence. It is the defensive half of the same method.

Islam as religion and state. Stages: preach, organize, implement. Democracy with red lines that cannot be voted away. Settlement as civilization-jihad. Da‘wa instead of the sword. Front groups with respectable names. Victimhood after every enforcement action.

Shared method

• Enter institutions you intend to outgrow.

• Front groups with respectable names.

• Call every pushback racist, Islamophobic, or a threat to democracy.

• Small cadre, large sympathetic layer.

• Long capture, not one riot.

They are not identical movements. They do not need to be. They share an enemy set and a method. Both treat the American constitutional order as a costume, not a destination. Both want the system that protected their entry rewritten once they have the desk.

The socialist project aims at property, policing, borders, and the idea that the United States is a legitimate nation rather than an occupying brand. The Brotherhood project aims at law, culture, and the veto over anyone who names the network. Where they intersect — anti-Western politics, Israel as the unifying hate object, institutions as the prize — the overlap is tight enough to matter.

Qutb wrote that it is “the nature of Islam to dominate, not to be dominated, to impose its law on all nations.” Lenin wrote that bourgeois parliamentarianism should be made “politically obsolete.” Stalin told foreign cadres to pick up the banner of bourgeois freedom until they could put it down. Al-Banna said if no one else will rule by the Islamic program, take the government. Qaradawi said conquer America through *da‘wa*, and do not put the fundamentals up for a vote. Akram said sabotage the house from inside, with the believers’ hands and the house’s own.

You can stack those sentences on one table. You do not get a single conspiracy. You get two manuals for the same kind of house.

That intersection is the danger. Not because every socialist is an Islamist, and not because every Muslim institution is a Brotherhood shop. Because two organized projects can use the same liberal openings at once: one taking City Hall and party lists under a socialist banner, one building the parallel civic stack under a religious-political banner.

If you only hunt the man with the flag, you miss the man with the nonprofit and the man with the nomination.

What the method requires of you

An open society cannot ban ideas. It can refuse to subsidize the machinery.

Name the organizations. Designate Brotherhood chapters and cut the fronts off from banking and grants where the legal standard is met. Stop treating “civil rights” branding as a force field around groups with a documented lineage to a movement that does not accept liberal sovereignty as final.

Enforce immigration law against people with no legal right to stay. Asylum and family reunification are not a moral obligation to import a political project. Citizenship is not a participation trophy. It is membership in a particular constitutional order.

Primary and vote against candidates whose project is to gut policing, borders, and the premise that the United States is a nation with the right to remain one. Do it in public, on the record, and do it before the office is used to lock the method in.

Every midterm cycle is sold as the most important one. This one is actually pivotal for people who still think Western society is worth keeping. Not because a single election ends either movement. Because the method only works while the public pretends that entry is the same thing as allegiance.

Lenin said to work inside the parliament until you can do away with it. Stalin said to pick up the other side’s banner until you can rally the majority. The Brotherhood memorandum said to become part of the homeland in order to sabotage the house. They were not writing poetry. They were writing instructions.

The costume only works if you keep applauding the performance.

A Worthless Strait

Treasury says the Strait of Hormuz could be “worthless” within two years. That is the quiet funeral for Iran’s favorite threat.

The line belongs to Scott Bessent, spoken on the sidelines of a G20 finance gathering: in two years the strait will be “a worthless piece of water,” because the oil will move across land. He had already said Hormuz is not going back to what it was, and that a large share of the energy that used to pass through it can be walked around it. Markets still jump when a tanker is hit. Capex does not. Capex is already leaving the choke point.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf’s line was simpler: if we cannot export oil, no one exports oil. Chaos as leverage. Close the tap, collect tribute, become a power.

It is backfiring.

Not speeches. Steel.

Trump has already pointed at the substitute: pipelines.

Texas and Alaska, built and pushed as domestic alternatives when tanker traffic through the strait dropped. Iraq–Syria, Basra toward Baniyas — a Chevron-linked corridor to the Mediterranean, talked up at as much as 2 million barrels a day once the spine is rebuilt. UAE Habshan–Fujairah, doubling the route that already dumps crude on the Gulf of Oman, outside Hormuz, accelerated toward 2027. Saudi East–West / Petroline, another 1–2 million barrels a day from the eastern fields to Yanbu on the Red Sea. Iraq’s Basra–Haditha spine, plus the live options toward Aqaba and Kirkuk–Ceyhan.

None of this is a press release that floats a VLCC. Some of it is already steel. Some of it is still an MoU and a BOOT model. All of it is the same lesson: a barrel that does not need an IRGC hall pass is worth more than a barrel that does.

Iran’s loss is Syria’s opening

The same barrels Tehran wants to hold hostage are being walked overland toward Baniyas. Trial trucks. Corridor talk. A Mediterranean outlet that does not ask the Revolutionary Guard for permission.

That is the fork in public. Reform enough to get back on the map, or stay the Iran route and watch the map get drawn around you. Syria is trying to cash the integration ticket. Iran is still selling chaos. One of those gets a pipeline. The other gets a narrower country.

The math that matters

Goldman-style math on existing plus planned bypasses: roughly 45 percent of pre-war Gulf export volumes shielded from Hormuz risk by end-2027, more than 60 percent by end-2028. Escorts and “southern routes” are the short-term navy story. The pipelines are the long-term eviction notice.

Bessent’s “worthless” is political language. The strait will still be water. Tankers will still use it when it is cheap and quiet. The threat only worked when there was no other door. The doors are being welded open.

Iran’s chaos strategy did not make Tehran indispensable. It taught buyers to leave. The United States is exporting. Venezuela is being pulled into a Western Hemisphere supply stack. When the crunch hit, even Russian cargoes got used as spare barrels. Every month Hormuz is a weapon, the world books pipe, Atlantic Basin crude, and suppliers that do not require Iranian permission.

Two models

If they actually kill traffic through the strait, they do not crown themselves. They shrink the strait. Insurance stays ugly. Capital expenditure goes to stable ground. Iran gets poorer, more isolated, and less relevant to the pricing meeting.

Two models are on the table.

Syria is trying to look like a corridor. Iran is still trying to look like a ransom note. A corridor attracts steel. A ransom note attracts a discount, a bypass, and a Treasury secretary willing to call your choke point a worthless piece of water — in public, on a finance-minister stage, while the market is still paying $90 for the scare.

They wanted world power through terror. They are digging a deeper hole of isolation and irrelevance. The threat only works if there is no other door. The doors are being welded open.

The bazaar revolt was not a mood. It was the commercial class walking off the floor.

It started on 28 December 2025 in the markets, over a currency that had already died. Shopkeepers in Tehran shut the shutters. Within days the strike had left the gold stalls and the exchange desks and become a national demand that the system itself go. By 8–9 January 2026 the state answered with live fire. The internet went with it.

HRANA later put names on more than 6,000 dead — about 6,500 protesters inside a confirmed list just over 7,000, with thousands more still under review. Other tallies ran higher. Even the official number, when the regime finally offered one, was in the thousands. That was the “manageable” crisis: inflation ugly, wages collapsing, the net still a tool people could sometimes force open.

Look at the board now.

The conditions did not improve. They deteriorated.

Two-hour gas lines, and in the south much longer than that. Food shortages. Commerce throttled. A long blackout, then a two-tier net so tight that X and a working VPN are a rumor for most of the country. Official pay is worth on the order of $80 a month at the street dollar — thirty-odd cents an hour if you work a full week. A household basket costs several times that.

The conditions that produced a bazaar revolt and a massacre are worse, not better. If that wave was serious, the next one does not get smaller. It gets broader. The shopkeeper who struck in December is hungrier in September. So is the man in the gas line. So is the household that cannot load a page.

A state that treats January as a warning tries to keep the apparatus by fixing the store. This one shut the internet, performed for an audience that cannot send a division, and taught the market what Iranian molecules are worth.

The feed is not for Mashhad

Meanwhile the regime is playing games on X — a platform its own people cannot reliably reach. The feed is not for Mashhad. It is gobbled up by supporters in Pakistan. To what end?

Islamabad is not walking into this war. It already signed a mutual defense pact with Saudi Arabia, then a wider Mecca arrangement with Riyadh and Ankara. Pakistan put jets and troops in the Kingdom. Iran has already hit Saudi ground and remains an active threat to that partner. A comment section in Lahore does not override a defense file in Riyadh.

Pakistan wants mediation and distance, not a second front. The chorus is loud. The government will not enlist.

That is the tell. The performance is not strategy. It is displacement. A government that cannot speak to its own bazaar speaks instead to a foreign timeline, then mistakes applause for a coalition.

Call it what buyers will call it

Every bizarre blast does operational work the wrong way. It does not scare Houston or Fujairah. It brands the barrel.

Call it what buyers will call it: Chaotic oil.

Chaotic oil is a cargo you cannot underwrite with a straight face. The contract may not load. The strait may become a speech. The seller may spend the week posting for an audience that cannot send a division.

Stable oil is the opposite: an offtake you can put in a model. Texas. Venezuela under a Western Hemisphere stack. Pipe to Fujairah, Yanbu, Ceyhan. The price of chaotic oil goes down relative to oil that actually shows up, because optionality has a bid and unreliability pays a discount.

That is the trap they created for themselves.

Outward propaganda deepens the impression that this government is not a serious counterparty. Not serious about the street it shot. Not serious about a commercial deal. Not even serious about who its online fans can actually deliver. Consumers rotate off chaotic oil toward suppliers who can honor a contract. Every rotation starves the budget that was supposed to buy loyalty. Every bizarre post cements the discount.

Underwriters do not price tweets. They price whether the molecule arrives. A barrel that may sit behind a blockade, vanish into a speech about the strait, or travel on a fleet that cannot buy ordinary insurance is not a barrel. It is an option with a bad story attached. Buyers will pay for certainty somewhere else. They already are.

The brand they are building

They could have treated January as a warning and tried to keep the apparatus by fixing the store. Instead they shut the internet, performed for Pakistan, and taught the market that Iranian molecules come with a circus.

The bazaar already voted with the shutters once. The economy that faces them now is meaner. The brand they are building on X is the one that makes the next cargo cheaper — and the next protest more expensive.

Chaotic oil does not just discount the barrel. It discounts the state that sells it. A government that cannot guarantee a loading window cannot guarantee a wage, a loaf, or a page. The street already learned that. The market is learning it now. The two lessons do not stay in separate rooms.
